Alright everyone! I have taken the time to put together what you might call a course description and a possible syllabus. I’ve gotten quite a bit of positive feedback about this, so please read what I have and tell me what you think.
The nature and path of this course will be determined by the students enrolled. This course’s aim is solely to iprove your writing skills, so the course will be malleable to your writing need.
I will use techniques found in poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and any other kind of writing that may be useful to helpoing you succeed. But that will not determine the course material. The material and direction of the course will change with your need and goos.
The following list is subject to change the course progresses.
In order to best improve your writing in whatever area you choose, you will learn:
-freewriting and brainstorming methods. How to prepare against writer’s block.
-how to write from what you know and use that to write what you have in mind
-techniques used by successful and captivating writers, as well as how you can use those techniques to strengthen your own work
-how to get out all of your “bad writing” in order to make room for what you’re looking for
-what makes good writing worth reading
-The difference between showing and telling in your writing
-how to make your writing excel
-why the sound of your work matters as much as the content
Possible topics and classes we will have are as follows:
-Stream of consciousness freewrites, looping and other pre-writing techniques
-Reviewing certain writer’s style and how to include that in your own writing
-Show, don’t tell
-Workshops on current writing
-How to use format to strengthen your writing
-Writing in class
-The importance of reading your work out loud
-Writing from experience vs. writing from imagination
-Lyricism in writing
-Writing from pre-writing, how to use what you already have towards what you want to have
That’s what I have so far. I am expecting this to change and grow as time goes on, so make sure to check for updates.
